Mammography

A mammogram is an x-ray examination of the breasts that is used to detect and diagnose breast disease. The mammography equipment used at Lifetime Health Medical Group has been developed solely for imaging breast tissue and uses very low levels of radiation.

Mammography exams performed at Lifetime Health Medical Group are now analyzed with the latest technology -- Computer Aided Detection (CAD). This FDA-approved system has been proven to increase the accuracy of mammograms, finding more cancers earlier, at a smaller stage.

Lifetime Health Medical Group Radiology is accredited by the American College of Radiology and our Mammography technologists are certified in Mammography.

The American Cancer Society recommends a screening mammogram every year for women ages 40 and older. A base line mammogram is suggested for all women at age 40.

Benefits of Lifetime Health Medical Group Radiology

  • State-of-the-art technology
  • Convenience of comprehensive services at one location
  • Your doctors and specialists work together as a team

What to expect

The Mammography technologist will position you on the mammography equipment. The breast will be gently compressed and the x-ray image will be taken. Breast compression allows for the maximum amount of breast tissue to be imaged using a low dose of radiation. The compression lasts only a few seconds; it may be uncomfortable but should not be painful.

How to prepare

On the day of your mammogram appointment, you should not wear deodorant, lotion or body powder from the waist up. If at all possible, please try to obtain any previous films and/or reports relating to your last mammogram examination and bring them to your appointment. Exam comparison is essential to providing an accurate diagnostic interpretation.

Please follow the check list below before your appointment:

  • Bring medical insurance information.
  • Do not wear deodorant, lotions or body powder before the exam.
  • Bring previous mammography films and/or reports.
